Would it be a bad idea for me to get my daughters dogs and cats since they have cystic fibrosis?
Sandra asked:
My twin daughters are four and they want a dog or a cat but they have Cystic Fibrosis so I’m worried about the animal hair and germs from the animals if I got them pets because they are very prone to infections already and I’ve never had any animals around them in our house before. Would having dogs and/or cats around them be a problem?

I would check wih their doctor and if possible I would suggest getting an animal that doesn’t shed.
I would think you would need to make sure that they don’t have allergic reactions to the pet that would cause them trouble in their lungs.

Talk to your doctor first about the impact of an animal on your daughters’ health. There are non-shedding breeds of dogs, such as poodles, but you do have to get them groomed every 5-6 weeks, which is an extra expense. Cats shed a lot (as do many dog breeds), which probably isn’t good for kids for CF.

I’m seventeen and have Cystic Fibrosis, I have two cats (they live inside and outside). I’ve had cats and a dog sense i was little and they never bothered me. All i got was a normal allergy test to see if I was allergic. You should ask for them to have one, and yes you should still talk to your doctor because as you know CF progresses differently and affects people differently depending on the person. If fur is a problem you could get a dog that doesn’t shed. If they are allergic or can’t have one there’s always goldfish..
You can talk to me anytime! Hope I was help and I hope your daughters stay healthy!

Be cautious. Animals, as well as a variety of other things (grass, soil, water) carry the pseudomonas bacteria. pseudomonas is very dangerous to children with cystic fibrosis, especially if it is not found and erradicated early. Talk to your pulmonologist before making such a big decision. My children have been begging for a puppy for a while now, i know its hard to explain such things to them. Good Luck to you!
