What exactly is he allergic to in the food? Usually its grain or something
try Science Diet they cary very well made dog food and they have an allergy kind i think. it’s a little pricier but it’s worth it for your dog!!
get a job to pay for the food because u should listen to the vet or ur dog might starve
Well, it depends on what he is allergic to. Once you know that, you find a food without that ingredient.
It is probably grain, or the main protein source in the food he was on before.
Wellness has two formulas that are special diets that use “novel” meat sources – duck and venison. If that’s what was suggested, find a grain free or whole grain kibble that is similar.
I know for a fact that Nature’s Recipe Healthy Skin formula (Venison recipe) is a whole grain kibble that is great for dogs with skin allergies. It’s just under $40 for a 40lb bag and the kibble isn’t too big for smaller dogs, nor too small for larger dogs … and is available at PetCo & PetsMart.
Taste of the Wild Prairie (yellow bag) is a grain free kibble produced by Diamond but is a venison recipe and I believe is around $50 for a 30lb bag … only at feed stores and specialty/natural pet stores in my area.
Other foods you might try -
Solid Gold
Blue Buffalo
Innova
Innova-EVO
California Naturals
TimberWolf
Nature’s Variety
Orijen
Organix
Merrick – heard this is good, but none of the rescues I work with use it. Though they do use all the others listed above, as well as Wellness.
Hope this helps
Blessings
The top allergens are corn, chicken, beef, wheat, soy and dairy –
The first thing to do is to find out what his mom was eating when she was pregnant – that may be the best food, as their immune systems are shaped during gestation, and the best food may be what she was eating then. It doesn’t have to be the same brand, but it might help to know the main ingredients.
If that doesn’t work, either because you don’t know, or because that’s what he’s eating now, I would try Nutro Natural Choice lamb & rice. It’s an easy try at getting around feeding him the common allergens, and it’s not as expensive as the Wellness line. I have one dog that can only eat that – it has very few ingredients.
Stay away from any of the ‘designer’ foods – they have a lot of different stuff in them, many of which are allergens like eggs and seeds. There are many things labeled ‘hypoallergenic’ that are nothing of the sort, because they will contain things that many allergy-prone dogs are sensitive to.
It may be that all you have to do is switch him over to lamb and rice – but again, stick with Nutro Natural Choice – the Nutro Max isn’t the same company anymore, and it contains other things. SO do a lot of ‘lamb & rice’ formulas of other brands.
If that doesn’t work, you may have to experiment with other things – and that is where the Wellness comes in. I know many allergy-prone dogs that do very well on their Atlantic whitefish and sweet potato formula.
The otehr major brands have very few options that really work for allergy dogs, because they tend to put chicken in them. In any amount, that usually kills the deal, so you may have to go to one of the special foods if the Nutro doesn’t work.
And lastly, if you happen to have access to a restaurant supply or fish market at wholesale prices, you can cook for your dog – I know of one dog on fish & oatmeal. You can get a balanced recipe and supplements to round out the diet by using a recipe tool available on
Feel free to email me if you need any help – I have worked with a great many allergy dogs, and have attended a lot of continuing ed with the best veterinary dermatologist in the US… but let’s hope the lamb & rice works – don’t forget to switch the food GRADUALLY, and keep a box of Gas-x on hand, to avoid bloat, which is lethal.
Try k9cuisine.com or california natural. Evo is supposed to be good. You have to compare prices. You can also ask your vet for guidelines on how to make homemade food. I am not sure which is cheaper.
Wellness is a very good brand. Try innova, Canidea, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul, Orijen etc… Find a brand without grains as this is most likely what your puppy is allergic to. Below is a site with many different dog foods and their ingredients and ratings. Most of the 5 and 6 stars are grain free so choose from them. Good Luck!
