I have a good friend that has diverticulitis and we are wondering if she could add psyllium to her diet? Would it cause any complications? Would it be a good sourse of fiber? She has a good diet, but as you can think she is also has constipation.
I happend to be a pharmacist and I think I know the answer, I just want to confirm me thinking. Please do not answer if you don’t know

The psyllium seed husks will end up in the diverticula also. Be careful.

Diverticulitis or Diverticulosis? Fiber would be good along with good hydration. Stool softeners could also be considered.
The respondents so far have given good advise….. although psyllium and stool softeners are rather last ditch. It is often suggested the patient try steel cut oats, or Scottish oats… same thing, available in the health food sections in most stores, and at Trader Joe’s… Usually 1/2 cup in 1 1/2 cups water, boil and cook until done, approx 20 min. Reduce meat intake, increase veggies and salads. Bananas are constipating, as is coconut. Add ground flax seed to it, if wished, and berries — (blue berries, raspberries are contraindicated since the seeds irritate the diverticula ) but add some milk and sugar… Have this for breakfast every morning. It produces only a bit of flatulence at first, but in about 2 weeks, things move quite well…. common problem in elderly, and those who eat poorly. This is a far better product that Quaker oat products…….
Benefiber is a new product that tho really artificial, may work as well, and less gritty than Psyllium seed.
