Types of foods I can eat with food allergies?

sweet jr. asked:

I recently found out that I am allergic to wheat, soy, tree nuts, seafood, dairy products, chocolate, melons, apples, and some vegetables. I have been looking online for allergens free products but they all contain one or more of the things above. Any help please.

  1. have your allergist refer you to a nutritionist. read labels at least 3 times, carry your epi pen & benedryl with you at all times, and take some cooking classes. life is changing, but it’s certainly not over. take charge.

  2. My son shares some of your allergens, and has some that are not on your list. It’s sooo hard with wheat/dairy/soy allergies to find prepackaged foods. Check your local health food store… Ian’s makes chicken nuggets that are safe that I feed my son, and Ener-G makes a tapioca bread that is edible if you toast it. But really, I’ve found it easier and more affordable just to cook for him than to try and find products that work.
He can eat meats, fruits and vegetables, rice, corn, and potatoes. Those should all be safe for you as well, except of course, the fruits and veggies that you are allergic to. Oh, he eats beans too, and thank God, because he misses a lot of good protein sources by not being able to have dairy, nuts, or eggs. (You can have eggs though, that’s one more thing to keep on your list.)
If you’re not allergic to coconut (which is botanically not considered a tree nut but the FDA has recently started classifying it as such) there is coconut milk yogurt and ice cream and it is DELICIOUS. it’s made by turtle mountain, i believe.
At our house, a typical dinner would be a meat, a safe starch, and a safe veggie. I would then save the leftovers and use it for his lunch the next day. That might be the easiest way for you to go as well- always make sure you cook plenty so you have leftovers on hand to eat from.
Most chain restaurants have allergen lists online. It’s helpful to familiarize yourself with safe foods for a few convenient places so you can have a few foods to choose from if you’re out and don’t have time to cook a big meal. For my son, i normally get him a plain burger patty with no cheese/no bun, lettuce, tomato, and mustard. He is not allergic to soy, so he can have things that you probably can’t, but a burger may be safe for you. We don’t do salads because lots of dressings have eggs, but you might check and see if you can find safe dressings. (not sure about the soy content of salad dressings.)
Did your doctor say whether you can have soy oil and/or lecithin? Many soy allergic people can still have the oil and lecithin without reaction. If so, that would make your life a lot easier, since most “vegetable oil” is actually soybean oil.

Good luck. You have my sympathy. We’ve been dealing with this junk for over a year, and while it still sucks, it does get easier and start to feel less overwhelming. Yes, some people grow out of food allergies… maybe you’ll get there!

a great website to check out is faan.org. an AMAZING yahoo group that would be a great souurce of support is

    good luck!
