complications from partial colectomy?

Jane R asked:

my husband had a partial colectomy done almost 4 weeks ago but he’s been swollen (like an egg sticking out) where the incision is on his belly and it’s very tender and hurts a lot. he also started having low grade fever tonight and feels like he’s getting his diverticulitis pain again. his surgeon says it’ll take a month or two to get better but he’s not feeling better. when should we go to ER and what might be causing all these complications? any answers would help. thank you.

  1. I am a RN who underwent a colectomy one year ago. If pain is increasing, go to the ER. Fever… go to the ER. Your husband knows his body best, trust him, and if he is not getting better, he’s not, despite the expertise of the surgeon. Many surgeons treat the ailment, not the whole person, and fail to see or admit to the complications that can arise. This is a very painful procedure with a long recovery, but at 4 weeks, he should be improving.

My incision did not swell, but it started to drain, alot. My surgeon tried to convince me I was getting better, and a week later, I was back in the OR with sepsis. I put my faith in my surgeons judgment, tried to be tough, and now, lucky to be alive, but still experiencing pain and fatigue. Trust yourself and your husband.

Ask the Doc what is the cause of the swelling. I hope it is not a abscess or herniation. Demand an answer.

Go to the ER…… obtain a 2nd opinion. I wish you quick healing!
