What’s that sudden pain in the upper left back?

Somewhere in Time asked:

It started yesterday and it still hurts. I wonder whether I should be concerned & go to the doctor. Honestly, don’t have time for this as have to go for a 2 weeks trip tomorrow. Any ideas how to get rid of this pain at home?

There should be a template to ask a health question.

My guess would be to suspect back pain from a muscle spasm. To id this I migh have you stand straight and tall with your arms by your side and have you point to where it hurts. I would also compare the how far back you can move your good arm. I would compare the two sides, and focus on the spot where you are complaining of pain. If there’s a bump–I think spams. I would also have you touch your toes as far as you can to see if you can touch, and also to feel the spot where you have pain to feel for that bump. Sometimes the spasm or bump is only felt when a person bends over.

The important question to differentiate mechanical pain from heart pain would be to ask you if you can make the pain worst or can make the pain go away. Movement and being able to cause the pain means that’s a skeletal problem, probably a spam. If the pain is woresening but cannot be caused to be worst by activity, then I would consider a cardiac cause.

Here’s the bottom line: In either case, you need medication. The treatment for a spasm is a prescription of probably robaxin or flexeril (DO NOT SELF MEDICATE IF YOU HAVE ANY). The pain probably won’t get better with motrin or tylenol (it could — DO NOT SELF MEDICATE BASED ON MY ADVISE), but I suspect you’ll need medicine for a spasm. The medicine works good, and the issue can be resolved for a simple routine visit to a primary care doctor. If it’s not a spasm, then it might be your heart, and in that case it also requires a trip to the hospital–specifically the ER.

You’ll have to consider your symptoms, the pain, etc, to determine to call an ambulance or have someone drive you. Hopefully what I told you will help you to idenfity the problem, but not matter what you should go to see a doctor.
