I have a good friend that has diverticulitis and we are wondering if she could add psyllium to her diet? Would it cause any complications? Would it be a good sourse of fiber? She has a good diet, but as you can think she is also has constipation.
I happend to be a pharmacist and I think I know the answer, I just want to confirm me thinking. Please do not answer if you don’t know

My mother has a variety of medical problems including diverticulitis and polymyalgia rheumatica. According to the medical literature both of these problem can be aided by adding exercise to one’s life. Nothing fancy just slow walking would be enough.

If we as family members bring up exercise it may turn into a problem. It has in the past. With each office visit I keep hoping that these medical professionals will suggest exercise, as a neutral party, and maybe the idea will get across without a family battle breaking out.

AMAZINGLY in spite of her medical issues her doctors never bring up exercise during her office visits. What is going on with the medical community? Have these doctors given up on her? Do they not understand the value of exercise? It is easier for them to just tell the patient what they want to hear? Or did they just plain forget to mention it?

Please explain.

(36-year-old female, family history of colon cancer on both sides of the family (maternal great-grandmother, paternal great-uncle)…also, dad has diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome I had my first colonoscopy three years ago, doctor found two polyps and lanced them off … will need another colonscopy in two years.)

My 17 yr old sister has been sick for over a month and my mom doesn’t have the $ to keep taking her all over the place. She has been to Immediate care clinic twice and she has had 2 ultrasounds. The first time the doc checked for appendicitis (said her levels looked ok) and ruled it out, they gave her a preg test (that was negative), they checked for UTI ( not that either) then they said it could be a cyst on her ovary (ultrasound said not that). Then it continued so my mom took her back- he then said gallbladder- well she got another ultrasound- that looks fine too they said. The doc said he didn’t think it was an ulcer or diverticulitis. She’s even gone to a gynecologist. They said she had a small yeast infection. I don’t think this could make her feel the way she’s been feeling. I think it’s more to it. She hurts in the lower right abdomen, has chills, sometimes fever, feels nauseaus, has thrown up a couple of times- it wakes her during the night. When we went out to eat for my grandma’s b-day she cried the whole time because of pain and she can’t hardly eat. What do u think could be going on??
She has also been constipated for 7 days but finally made a BM 3 times yesterday after taking a laxitive.

My mother has had stomach issues for a long time and she has also told me that her family has had diverticulitis, as well gallbladder problems which i am not yet aware of the symptoms that go along with that.. In the morning she wakes up with automatically having to go to the bathroom and it honestly has a distinct odor to it and it is also not regular stools. They are more loose almost like diarrhea. But, she has never went to the doc about it. She cannot eat chocolate or have juices and cannot eat a regualr meal without having an upset stomach. Just this past week she stayed with us and we went out to eat and I cooked some mashed potatoes and chicken. She went home and a few days later told me she has been throwing up with diarrhea and her stools are black. I am not sure what this is all about but she says she has had black stools before which are an indication of blood. If anyone knows more about what this sounds like please let me know, especially if it is something serious. Thank you.

They had to go back in 36 hours later to stop the bleeding. It has been a few days now and he is eating but his bowel movement is dark and tarry. Is this normal? I am so worried there is something else wrong. He had symptoms of the stomach flu which turned out to be a ruptured bowel from diverticulitis. Didn’t have a problem prior to this.

There are some vague lucent areas within the left iliac bone perticularly superiorly and near SI joint. The cortex has not been destroyed. This could be an area of encondroma formation or other benign processes but I can not entirely exclude lytic lesions from carcinoma. Bone scan might be helpful in futher evaluation.

Colonic diverticulosis with possible mimimal diverticulitis at the descending colon and to sigmond junction. There is alos narrowing of the colon at the rectosigmond junction. In addition, there are some lucent areas in the left iliac bone near the SI joint. This could be benign enchondromas but oter lyctic defects are not excluded and bone scan is suggested.
