If you have never been to a chiropractor before, you might be wondering exactly what to expect. It is easy to have many misconceptions about this kind of alternative medicine. As a matter of fact, if you have some trepidation about a visit to a chiropractor in the first place, it is easy to get worried rather than look forward to some much needed help. Here are the facts about understanding your very first visit to a chiropractor:

You chiropractor will ask you about your current health problems. Much against the grain of popular opinion, she or he does not only want to hear about your back pain or shoulder aches, but also about frequent colds, susceptibility to infection, hearing problems, changes in weight, and even any cramping you might be experiencing. It is important that you state exactly what you are feeling, even if you think it might sound silly, since you do not know the proper medical terminology to couch your expressions in. The fact of the matter remains that much of chiropractic relies on the sensitivity of touch, and the more detailed your description of the problem and its manifestation, the more able the chiropractor will be to clearly understand what it is that troubles you and most certainly it will ease her or his way of finding the problem and also its source.

The next set of questions asked will deal with your medical history, including your family’s medical history. Included in this set of questions is a subset that deals with medical care you are currently receiving as well as care you have received in the past, no matter what the source of that care is. Be sure to talk about hospitalizations, consultations with dieticians, physicians, or anyone else with whom you have undergone treatment for your health. Your chiropractor will take detailed notes to ensure that nothing is missed.

Next, your chiropractor will want to know about your job. She or he will not only inquire about the stress level of your job, but also ask about the exact kind of work that you do, whether you sit or stand while performing your job, which kinds of machines – if any – you operate, what you do for lunch, whether you walk at any time during your work day or are mostly sedentary, and quite possibly a host of other questions.

As you can see, the questions your chiropractor will ask deal with you as a whole person, not simply singling out your spine, a shoulder, or maybe a leg. While this may be part and parcel of common medicine, the very fact that chiropractic care is considered alternative medicine makes it different in this respect. Your chiropractor understands that there is more to your health issues than simply a sprained ankle, a slipped disc, or a vertebra that is out of alignment. The goal is to find out what caused the problem and how it can be corrected so that it will not trouble you again.

Everyone knows that walking is a healthy activity and with the sudden rise in public awareness, the pedometers are firmly engaged and many will walk in the evenings, in the morning, and whenever possible. Sine many now own dogs, the latter also benefit from the realization that walking is a healthful course of action, and man and hound live happily ever after, or do they? Sadly, there are many for whom walking is not an activity they are looking forward to. Ankle pains, lower back pain, blisters, and a whole host of other complaints are oftentimes heard in a chiropractor’s office when someone is beginning a new walking regimen. Many a chiropractor wishes that an aspiring walker would come into the office for a consultation prior to engaging in this newfound activity, but in lieu of doing so, here are some tips that will make your next walk a fun filled and healthy activity:
?	First and foremost, pick a time that works for you. Do not walk if you are going to be rushed and likely to cut corners, make bad choices with respect to crossing streets at dangerous intersections, and have to suddenly burst into sprints so as to make it to work on time.
?	Dress for the occasion. Wear loose fitting clothes that are comfortable. Do not fall into the trap of trying to look stylish at the expense of being able to move freely.
?	Wear shoes that both your chiropractor and your orthopedic surgeon would approve of. In today’s world, shoes run the gambit of being overstated, overexposed, and overly expensive. You do not have to spend a mint in order to purchase a model of shoe simply because it showcases the famous swoosh or a famous athlete’s name or logo. Instead, focus on functionality. There are actually different kinds of shoes that fulfill different kinds of functions – some are for running while others are for walking. Purchase the kind of shoes that fits your need, feet, and budget. Go to a reputable sports store where you will have attendants who can assist you with the purchase and help you to understand what you should look for in a sport shoe. Wear both shoes when you try them on with realistic socks such as you would wear during walking. This will show you rather quickly if the shoe will function properly.
?	Invest in a pedometer. This will help you to ascertain if you are walking the requisite 10,000 steps to be considered active or if you are falling short of this goal.

As you can see, there is a lot more to walking than meets the eye. While every physician suggests walking as a healthy exercise, it is your chiropractor who will seek to counsel you in the proper methodology of walking so as to avoid spinal injuries brought on by wearing an incorrect kind of shoe which will result in an uneven distribution of weight which, in turn, would result in spinal abnormalities that could gradually develop.

Scoliosis is the kind of ailment affecting the spine that can be seen with the naked eye. Referring to an aberrant curvature of the connected vertebrae, this condition may present either because there is another condition which is already affecting the muscles or because it is a birth defect. Sadly, scoliosis is not the kind of condition that can be treated solely with chiropractic care, but instead it is a study in true interdisciplinary cooperation.

Generally speaking, the first indication that scoliosis is apparent obviously comes with a curved spine. The curve might go either to the left or the right, but it is painfully obvious. Interestingly, this condition is not always a birth disorder but may be dormant until a later time, such as adolescence, at which point a sudden appearance of a hump may indicate the problems the spine is experiencing. Adding to this diagnosis is the fact that suddenly hips and shoulders are no longer even but may be lacking symmetry.

At this time a physician is usually sought out for help. While some patients will first go to a chiropractor, the latter will generally emphasize the need for another medical professional to also make a diagnosis since oftentimes surgery is necessitated by the presentation of the scoliosis. When the consultation with the chiropractor occurs after a diagnosis is made by a medical doctor, the reason is usually two-fold: the goal is either to avoid surgery or to support the surgeries that have already occurred and the medications that have been prescribed. While the former – generally speaking – is an unlikely though not impossible scenario, the latter is a wise decision on the part of the patient.

The chiropractor will appreciate having access to your x-rays simply to confirm the exact location of the problem. Additionally, any surgical procedures performed should be amply documented, preferably with a prognosis for results and a summary of results actually obtained, and also an exact summary of the medications prescribed, the frequency of injections, and the outlook for progression. Sadly, in younger patients progression is much more likely than in adult onset cases, yet each case revolves on its own facts and there is no guarantee of stemming the effects of scoliosis.

Quite often chiropractors report that they have great success when treating neuromuscular scoliosis, and in addition to mild manipulation the stress is put on weight bearing exercises which also focus on maintaining and perhaps even increasing the ability of the spine to move. The goal is to avoid an occurrence of a slip which may actually lead to a decrease of the range of motion instead of an increase. While it is rare that this happens, it is a very real danger if the exercise regimen is not strictly followed and the patient’s spine is permitted to remain idle and without proper strength training. There are actually times when a chiropractor will suggest the use of light muscle stimulation with the help of a low electric charge, yet this is rarely recommended without the chiropractor and physician first communicating about the long term outlook and short term goal setting.

Ask any three or four guys lined up at the bar of the favorite watering hole on a Saturday night what they know about chiropractics, and you will undoubtedly get a lot of jokes about rib cracking, bone mashing, and easy fees. It is sad, really, that a large segment of the American public is still somewhat ignorant when it comes to the advanced methodology of chiropractics. While it is true that the practice owes its origin to alternative medicine, spiritualism, and – some say – early hypnotherapy, the modern truth of the matter reveals that chiropractors have many tools in their belts that they are not afraid to use.

While you will not see a prescription pad or syringe in your chiropractor’s office, you might find the office of a nearby medical imaging service on her or his speed dial. After all, medical imaging will be able to tell convincing tales about your body that a mere touch of even the most experienced practitioner might not be able to duplicate. It is interesting to note that medical imaging does not simply refer to radiology, which would of course simply mean an x-ray of the bones. While it is true that an x-ray will give many valuable insights to a chiropractor before the onset of treatment, there are also other kinds of medical imaging that she or he might rely on to get a good picture of the patient’s health.

Take for example thermography which helps to find out the heat distribution in a patient’s body. This kind of imaging will quickly point to inflammation and also help a chiropractor to decide whether to apply a lot of pressure in a certain area during treatment or forego treatment until the inflammation can be dealt with. Other kinds of imaging may reveal the condition of tissues. Ultrasound technology will help a chiropractor to tell not only whether there are tears in ligaments, but also if the muscles overall are in good working condition or if specific strength training needs to be added to the chiropractic treatment to help with the rehabilitation of the spine.

It is interesting to note that a chiropractor relies so heavily on her or his hands, sense of balance, and the history received from the patient. Conventional medical professionals take into account the patient’s history and then order a battery of tests, all but disregarding the specific complaints of the patient for the simple fact that while many complain of a host of illnesses, only a few turn out to be truly sick. A chiropractor, on the other hand, sees the patient as a whole instead of simply an affected limb. As such, any complaint is taken serious, since it may have bearing on other problems the patient may not yet even have experienced. At your first consultation you will probably find that your chiropractor will take copious notes and perhaps might also ask you to demonstrate certain problems in gait or rate pain on a scale from one to 10; if certain ailments cannot be readily felt or visualized, medical imaging will be ordered simply to help the professional get a good grip on your overall state of musculoskeletal health.

No other medical professional is quite as associated with overall physical wellness as the chiropractor. Granted, in unlearned circles the work is still referred to as “bone cracking” yet this kind of thinking is quickly dying out, especially now that chiropractic care is entering the mainstream. It is not surprising that more and more patients flock to chiropractors, since many insurance companies now recognize them as primary care physicians and will cover their visits. In the past it was an uphill battle to have a chiropractors’ visit covered by any health insurance company, yet in light of the undisputable advances of chiropractic care, the methodology involved of curing the whole patient, and the fact that the education of practitioners is above dispute made it easy for these breakthroughs to occur.

Of course, with these privileges also come responsibilities, and quite a few practitioners who only yesterday saw only the occasional patient in search of alternative healing suddenly find themselves facing full waiting rooms. For many this requires a shift in thinking since suddenly they are no longer sought out by those who favor alternative medicine but instead they are now becoming members of a team that is often comprised of internists, orthopedic practitioners, and a host of others who are all looking after one patient. Promoting wellness through chiropractic care now involves not only treating the patient but also keeping the other members of the team informed as to progress made, assessments found, and changes in general health or complaints the patient may have. Conversely, if a chiropractor is chosen as a primary care physician by a patient, this will involve long hours pouring over charts and reviewing information sent over to the office by other physicians.

As part of a team, the patient will also expect you to refer them to another doctor for blood work and other testing as needed, and it is no longer considered to be out of form for a chiropractor to do so. The ultimate goal is of course the overall health of the patient, and this is to be achieved in the most natural way possible with as little medication as is indicated. In some cases this might require a chiropractor to educate a patient who is searching for overall health in alternative medicine but may be dubious about the idea of also dealing with the established forms of medicine. As such, a chiropractor will need to weigh limitations of treatment, time spent on alternative methodology, and also the ability of the patient to follow a strict regimen of nutrition and exercise which you may have prescribed as part of the healing process. Thus, a chiropractor promotes wellness not just through treatment of the individual patient, but also through education of the patient and the idea of involving her or him in the process that will lead to wellness. For some the latter might be a new experience, especially if thus far they have only been on the receiving end of shots and pills, rather than actual holistic care.

Who would have thought that your chiropractor has helpful advice for painting enthusiasts? Painting your house with your chiropractor does not imply that she or he will visit you next Saturday with a paintbrush in hand and ready to do some work. Instead, it simply underlines the fact that springtime brings the notion of spring cleaning, makes the flaking paint around your shutters stand out, and seems to increase the amount of bother that the peeling paint on your living room ceiling causes you. Suddenly you notice the ill-done paintjobs of years past, and you vow to make things right this spring. Chiropractors know about spring fever, but they warn that this is also the prime season to injure yourself with the most innocent activities, especially if you are not prepared physically to undertake activities and chores that your body is not accustomed to and conditioned to do.

There is more to painting even a square room than just the up and down motion of the brush and the gradual movement down the room. There is the twisting to reach that far off spot that is just a bit higher than the ladder will reach, the bending to get the paintbrush into the crevices between the floor and the and the corner, the reaching for the overhead painting, and a host of other activities that spell trouble in the world of a chiropractor. To this end, many chiropractors counsel their patients that when spring has sprung and the honey do lists are getting longer than your arm, it is wise to approach them with care and to prevent the pain that hobby painters experience in their muscles of the back and shoulders, and even the upper legs. You might remember the morning after a painting project in the past when waking up was almost synonymous with pain in areas of your body you did not even know had muscle groups!

Painting your house with your chiropractor’s advice means following a lot of lifestyle counseling tips she or he has to give you. For example, your chiropractor wants you to know that stretching and warm up exercises are part and parcel of having a freshly painted house. You will help to prevent injuries, joint pain, and also the next morning’s muscle stiffness that you are bound to experience otherwise. As you are painting, keep a healthy posture, even when it is hard to do. After prolonged periods of time spent bent or stretched, do some light loosening up exercises to keep your muscles limber and to prevent any pain the next morning. After you project is completed and the clean up is done, do some cool down exercises to help your muscles slow down and work off some of the substances that have been building all day in them. This will help you to not wake up the next morning virtually unable to get out of bed. While these exercises do not guarantee a pain free painting experience, they will greatly reduce the stress that your body will suffer. For the more persistent ailments be sure to make an appointment with your chiropractor!

Who has not woken up one morning only to feel so much back pain that it was next to impossible to get out of bed? For some, this is a daily occurrence and as such almost goes by unnoticed, just like the pain pills that are being swallowed for breakfast. Fortunately, your chiropractor can help you to not only get over your back pain, but to also to adjust your daily life so that you will be able to eliminate a large number of triggers that cause back pain in the first place.

Generally speaking, every activity has the potential to contribute to your aching back. It does not matter if you are walking, standing, sitting, or lying down – if your posture is not as good as it should be, even sleeping can be a trigger for back aches. Of course, there are some things you can do to avoid back pain altogether, or to at least minimize its occurrence. Your chiropractor will be able to help you with suggestions specifically tailored to your life style, but here are some tips that apply to almost everyone:
?	If you feel a sharp pain in your back or simply a dull ache, write down exactly what happened when you first felt it. If it occurs frequently throughout the day, write down the times that it seems to present most of all to find out if there is a correlation between an activity and the onset of pain.
?	Make an appointment with a chiropractor for a thorough exam and subsequent treatment as needed.
?	Check your weight. It is no secret that overweight persons will suffer more often from back pain than those with a normal weight. After all, the bones have to do more work to carry all the weight, and if you are not overweight, this is a factor that will not present itself in your life.
?	Wear shoes that make sense. Footwear is a sore spot for many a chiropractor, and whenever a woman comes to treatment in high heels, or anyone presents themselves with shoes that are so worn down that they make a healthy gait next to impossible, a chiropractor will point out that until the patient will invest in proper and healthy footwear, there will always be an increased risk of back pain.
?	Lifting is an important subject for many chiropractors as well. When treating those who in the course of their work lift heavy loads or even lighter loads but on a continuous basis, chiropractors advise to lift properly with the knees and not the lower back.

Of course, if you already suffer from pack pain, your chiropractor will be able to help you. Treating you as a whole person – not just your back – your chiropractor will adjust your spine, give you tips on proper nutrition and also help you to make good choices with respect to exercise. As you can see, back pain is not something that needs to be endured but instead with the proper professional help, you will be able to make it a piece of your history without popping so much as one pill!

Part and parcel of the chiropractic visit is the adjustment of any misaligned vertebrae which may in turn be causing you a lot of pain and overall discomfort. There are many myths surrounding the actual manipulation of the spine that takes place, it is an important fact about this chiropractic tool that there is a large amount of experience that goes into each and every healing touch. While you might be somewhat uncomfortable about the experience the first time you visit a chiropractor, it is significant to remember that she or he went through years of training in order to refine her or his experience and skill. Thus, you are not dealing with someone who is apprehensive about adjustment your spine and for this reason may apply too much or not enough pressure but instead you will be cared for by a medical professional who has an intimate knowledge of the procedure and knows just how much pressure to apply at what location of your body.

Sometimes patients report that while their spine was being adjusted they felt or head a distinct pop. This might scare you simply because it might sound like something burst. Yet in truth, these popping sounds and sensations are little more than bubbles of gas that are being released when your joint is moved. It sounds scary but there is no danger or ill effect associated with it.

Of course the number one important fact about chiropractors and their healing art rests in the duration of the treatment results. Oftentimes patients will visit a doctor expecting the effects of their treatment to last forever. While this might be an acceptable expectation to have of a surgeon who operates on the body to remove something or to surgically knit something together, it is imperative to understand that since your spine undergoes so much work and pressure on a daily basis, there are no guarantees about how long the adjustment will last. At times it only takes one wrong move to undo your last chiropractic adjustment while other times you can go for a month without needing to have your chiropractor do any more manipulations.

While this may not sound like much, keep in mind that injuring your spine by every day lifestyle choices is easily done and just as easily fixed. In the beginning of your treatment relationship you might visit your chiropractor for a number of times to affect the healing you are looking for while after the initial adjustments have taken good hold, you will only need to visit on an as needed basis or perhaps on a maintenance basis. Discuss this concern with your chiropractor so that you will understand how the adjustments will affect your overall health and how often they might need to be repeated in order to take hold more completely. Additionally, speak to your chiropractor about concerns you might have about your everyday activities and how they might be impacting your musculoskeletal health. Remember that your chiropractor is a holistic healer who not only cares about your spine but also about your whole body and how it is affected by everyday living!

Dogs, just like their owners, can suffer from subluxation. It is therefore not surprising that quite a few specialists have begun to advertise their services as bona fide animal chiropractors. While this is a positive development – after all, it is great that chiropractic care for animals is now available – there is also room for error, and some who hold themselves out to be animal chiropractors really are not. Sure, they may have a rudimentary understanding of veterinary science, but they do not know the fine points of an animal’s anatomy. On the flipside, they may be well versed in human chiropractics, but know little of animal chiropractics. Here are some signs that you have found a practitioner you should avoid:
?	The professional you are visiting is not specifically trained in animal chiropractics. This may be either a veterinarian who is dabbling in chiropractics or a human chiropractor who wants to expand her or his clientele. There are bona fide courses of study for those who would engage in this profession, and successful completion is rewarded with a certificate.
?	The professional you are visiting does not have any veterinary background. This is oftentimes found in chiropractors who are seeking to train themselves to become animal care providers, but they are lacking the in depth knowledge in the methodology as well as the facts needed to adequate diagnose problems.
?	If you find someone who is both trained and also certificated, take a look at their methods. If the professional proceeds to pull the dog’s legs or even the tail, it is a good indicator that she or he is lacking hands on training or expertise, and it is probably best to move on. Avoid those who are good with horses but have never treated a dog before. The same is true the other way round as well. Many animal chiropractors are general practitioners, but some specialize and it is hard to infer knowledge from one species to another.
?	If the veterinary chiropractor is content to take your word for the ailment and fails to examine the dog prior to engaging in vertebrae adjustments, it is best to move on. While you know your dog best, a veterinary chiropractor needs to examine the animal to ensure that there are no underlying causes for the change in gait – such as a cracked or broken bone – which could be aggravated by any attempts of manipulation or adjustment.

Speak to your trusted veterinarian to recommend a practitioner. Perhaps friends or family members know of a veterinary chiropractor who is great with certain types of animals, and you can go ahead and make an appointment. Similarly, if you do not know anyone who can make a recommendation, go ahead and contact local dog breeders for suggestions and advise. Last but not least, contact the licensing agencies which certificate animal chiropractors to give you names and phone numbers for practitioners in your area. You will find that finding the right chiropractor for Rover is just as important as finding the right practitioner for you!
